Spark of genius at Goodwood festival
FThe theme of this year s Goodwood Festival of Speed in June will be Spark
of genius - breaking records, pushing boundaries. The event will celebrate individual
competitors and engineering visionaries who took risks in their quest for victory.
Showcased will be the brave drivers and riders who campaigned in the first Brooklands
and Isle of Man TT races
100 years ago, through to the land speed record breakers
and the cream of the current F1 and World Rally competitors. There will be an exciting
line-up of rarely seen, pioneering competition and road machines, as well as legendary
driving and riding heroes, past and present. Festival visitors can expect to see
innovative racing cars that pioneered technical benefits now commonplace in many
everyday family cars, including four-wheel-drive and turbo-charging, in addition
to less conventional features, such as six-wheels and ground effects for improved
traction. As in previous years, admission to the Festival of Speed will be strictly
by advance ticket only. |

Danger alert
In future, motorists will be able to detect danger even if the danger spot lies
around the next bend or over the horizon. During the course of a field test, five
vehicles equipped with WLAN-based radio technology systems sent details of critical
situations detected by their on-board sensors, fog, black ice or obstacles on the
road such as broken-down vehicles, to following cars. These early warnings enabled
the drivers of the cars behind to
prepare for the danger and adapt their speed in
plenty of time. |

Winter driving events
Mercedes AMG offers a range of customer driving events on ice and snow in
Sweden combining driver training with a taste of the traditional lifestyle of the
region close to the polar circle. The aim of the event, which is
run by professional
instructors, is to give participants the skills they need to control their vehicles
perfectly. The popular winter event takes place between January and March, with
the 24 participants in each four-day training session having the use of three different
AMG high-performance models: the CLK 63 AMG, the SLK 55 AMG and the C 55 AMG. All
the vehicles are equipped with special studded tyres to ensure a certain degree
of grip on the ice tracks. ESP® is deactivated to allow guests to practice controlling
the vehicles at the limit of their handling capabilities. |
