722 signed
off
Sir Stirling Moss drove the Mercedes 300SLR in which he and Denis Jenkinson won
the 1955 Mille Miglia for the last time, and very briefly, in this year's
retrospective event. Moss then signed the no 722 car on the side of the bonnet:
"We did it to together, many thanks and affection. Ciao, Stirling Moss". Soon
the car will be a star exhibit in the new Mercedes museum being constructed in
Stuttgart. This year's restrospective celebrated the 50th anniversary of the
legendary overall record speed of 98 mph set by Moss. Such a high average was
possible thanks to journalist and navigator Denis Jenkinson, who recce'd the
route and developed pace notes that were jotted down on a continuous scroll,
which Jenkinson could read at speed on the move. |

Be smart,
be safe
Cheshire Fire Service has taken delivery of 20 smarts as part of a four-year
campaign to promote fire prevention. Two of the smarts are liveried up in the
traditional Battenburg design of red & yellow squares, like mini fire
engines. The remainder carry the campaign slogan urging the public to 'Be
smart, be safe'. The high visibility smarts will be driven by frontline fire
safety officers and will be appearing at schools and shopping centres, and at
roadshows promoting safety relating to traffic accidents. |

Records
tumble
Following their much-publicised world records for diesel-engined vehicles over
distances of 100,000 kilometres, 50,000 and 100,000 miles, the three
record-hungry standard production Mercedes E 320 CDIs are once again the centre
of attention. After their 30-day non-stop endurance trial on a 5- mile oval
track in the Texan town of Laredo, these saloons performed a consumption test
run and clocked up no less than 1039 miles on a single tank of fuel. This
translates into an average fuel consumption of 49.9 mpg. |

Miracle Drywash
With hose-pipe bans a reality, a remarkable new product is set to
revolutionise the way we clean and polish our cars. Miracle Drywash is the
product that water companies, environmentalists, and city dwellers could only
once imagine to be possible. A spray, not an aerosol, which lifts dirt and
grime from any painted surface, leaving it cleaned and polished. The product
uses no additional water and puts no harmful soap down the drains. With an
increasing number of us living in apartments with no easy access to washing
facilities, the notion of simply taking two cloths and a small bottle out of
the glove box of the car, and having a cleaned and polished vehicle in half the
time it takes with a bucket and sponge, is attractive. Details on
