Watch out!
A motorist lost his £40,000 S-class Mercedes after a crook posing as a buyer sped off with the car after a test drive. The thief turned up to view the car and then asked to take it for a spin. The owner agreed and let the conman take the driver's seat while he sat next to him in the passenger seat. They drove to a train station, on the pretext of the buyer getting a train home. But when the owner got out of the car to get into the driver's seat, the crook slammed the passenger door and drove off leaving the stunned owner behind. Police warn motorists selling their cars to strangers to take simple precautions:

• Never get out of the car when someone else is in it.
• If a potential buyer calls you, take their number, preferably a landline number, and call them back on it to confirm who they are.
• If a buyer arrives at your home in a car take their registration number.
• Make sure that the person is insured to drive your car.

Footballersı Mercs
A recent survey lists two Mercedes M-class models in the top ten most popular vehicles owned by Premiership footballers. The Mercedes ML 55 AMG is driven by 16 players including Ruud Van Nistelrooy (Man Utd), Freddie Ljundberg (Arsenal), Darius Vassel (Aston Villa), Paul Scholes (Man Utd), and Sean Newton (Wolves), whilst the Mercedes ML350 is the choice of nine players including Steve McManaman (Manchester City), Dion Dublin (Aston Villa), Lomana Lua Lua (Newcastle), and Stephen Carr (Spurs).

Targa triple
The Targa Florio and the Coppa Florio were among the toughest and most difficult road races in Europe. A single lap of the extremely narrow and tortuous mountain route just outside Palermo, in Sicily, was 108 kilometers long. The Targa Florio involved four laps, the Coppa Florio another on top of these, a total of 335 miles. Winning the Targa did not automatically mean winning the Coppa, for the chances of forfeiting all on the road - or off it on the last lap were still enormous. Tremendous credit is due to Christian Werner in this respect, for in 1924 he won both categories in a supercharged Mercedes and also drove the fastest lap overall. His team mates Christian Lautenschlager and Alfred Neubauer took 2nd and 3rd prizes.

Brooklands update
The proposed Mercedes Heritage and Technology Centre at Brooklands has been granted detailed planning permission. The centre, on a 150 acre site at Weybridge in Surrey, will be a technological showcase for Mercedes passenger cars and will commemorate the history of the marque and its association with Brooklands. The new building will be next to the Brooklands Museum and will allow visitors to learn about the evolution of the present day range of cars and to experience at first hand the many performance, safety, economic and environmental benefits of Mercedes ownership. The centre will offer customers the chance to customise and collect their new car and to test drive vehicles on a specially designed circuit.

much more than a polish
Swissol has long been known as the home of fine automobile cleaning and preparation products. Hand made in Switzerland for over 70 years, they are now available through new UK distributor Morethanpolish Ltd. ³We aim to offer a highly personal, tailored service for each customer and are happy to spend time discussing the right products for each car² says Mark Wibberley, MD. The full range is available to purchase on-line at www.morethanpolish.com, which also offers other detailing ranges plus car covers, RoadPilot speed camera warning devices and Hindsight, the revolutionary cleanser for plastic rear screens. This fantastic 280 SL Pagoda was specially prepared and photographed for Mercedes Owner. It was prepared as follows: first using Paint Rubber to produce a smooth finish, then applying an abrasive Cleaner Fluid on some areas to remove scratches. The new regular Cleaner Fluid 2004 was then applied followed by Concorso wax. A second layer of wax was applied within 2 days. This succeeds in changing the refraction index of the paint surface and so considerably enhances the shine. Contact: www.morethanpolish.com 01780-767080 (Mark Wibberley direct line).
