Record-breaking in Laredo
Mercedes new V6 CDI diesel engine, set to
replace the existing five and six-cylinder inline
engines from summer 2005, has marked
the start of its career with a string of world
records. Fitted in three standard-production
E320 CDI models, the cars covered the
100,000 kilometres, 50,000 and 100,000 miles
respectively in world-record time, and with no
technical problems. Other class records for
diesel vehicles add to the impressive recordbreaking
achievement on the high-speed circuit
in Laredo, Texas. Despite the extreme
stresses, the maintenance-free diesel
particulate filter held up magnificently over the
entire record distance without any deterioration
in performance, testimony to the reliability
and durability of this exhaust technology. |

Wurz successful in Imola
Kimi Raikonnen convincingly lead the
Imola F1 race in his McLaren Mercedes.
Unfortunately, a driveshaft failure put paid
to his chance of a first GP win in 2005. It
was left to Alexander Wurz, standing in for
the injured Montoya, to uphold the team’s
honour, which he did by finishing a
creditable fourth in his first race for several
years. Team Principal Ron Dennis said:
"Of course we are disappointed with the
outcome of the race. Kimi was doing a
fantastic job and had already pulled out a
healthy lead over Fernando Alonso until a
CV joint failed in the driveshaft. Alex's
fourth place was well deserved and
reflected the professional approach he has
taken to the race. |

Alesi wins for Mercedes
Twelve months ago Jean
Alesi should have won
the opening round of the
DTM at Hockenheim,
but was robbed of likely
victory due to a
mechanical failure. This
year, he probably
shouldn’t have prevailed,
but an ambitious pit
strategy, coupled with
prodigious speed from
his Mercedes C-Class
presented a winning
opportunity and he
grabbed it with both
hands. In a race that
saw the arrival in the
DTM of Mika Hakkinen,
it was another ex-F1
hero who gave us a
timely reminder of his
talents. The question is,
can Alesi keep that
momentum going as the
season progresses. |
